Area Information

Information About Our Area:

Sunset at Salmon Harbor in Winchester Bay

In Coastal Douglas County, great fishing is available year round. Crabbing and clamming in Winchester Bay is also bountiful. Additionally, some of the sweetest oysters in the country are grown here.

Umpqua River Lighthouse, Winchester Bay

Visit the more than 100 year old Umpqua River Lighthouse and Museum where the light signature red and white flashes can be seen 19 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. One of the few remaining working lighthouses in Oregon, this lighthouse offers regular summer tours and a whale watching platform. The Lighthouse Museum exhibits historic information and artifacts of the settling of the Gardiner, Reedsport, and Winchester Bay area.

Ride an ATV in the heart of the Dunes

Winchester Bay has the tallest dunes in Oregon. Situated in the heart of the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area, some of the most thrilling and exciting atv, sandrail, off-road vehicle, and dirt bike riding can be found. At the beginning of August each year, the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce sponsors the nationally acclaimed DuneFest  is held in Winchester Bay.

Experience Oregon's tallest Dunes

Some of the most spectacular sand dunes may also be explored from hiking trails where you will experience miles of ever-changing dunes and the rugged beauty of these coastal forests.

Steep in the cultural heritage of
Gardiner

Behold the charm of the tiny coastal town of Gardiner. Settled in 1850 after the “Bostonian” shipwrecked at the mouth of the Umpqua, this community was once called “The White City by the Sea” for the homes and churches that gleamed against the green background of beautiful forestland on the east side and the deep waters of the Umpqua River on the west side. Walk the streets of Gardiner for a view of historic homes from those who settled this area. Visit the Gardiner Community Cemetery to see the graves of the town’s ancestors that date back to the 1870s.
